Perhaps some of the most important relationship questions go something like this:

Can I put myself in another person’s shoes?

Am I able to look at things from their perspective?

Do I have the ability and willingness to see things through another’s eyes?

Or perhaps, if we put into question form one of the greatest statements of all time and eternity:

“Can I do unto others as I would have them do unto me?”

All these questions are really about the same thing . . . empathy, defined as “the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.”

This issue of Donor Focus has much to do with the power of empathy, both in leadership and in understanding the experiences of others.

Graham Shaw’s article, Leading with Empathy and Amy Sewell’s announcement about our new study, The Donor Experience Scorecard, all have to do with valuing relationships with others. In other words, having empathy toward those we value.
